Our People

The people behind the science

We're a group of virologists, neuroscientists, and molecular biologists working to understand how herpes simplex virus hides in neurons — and what makes it wake up.

Principal Investigator

AC

Anna Cliffe, PhD

Principal Investigator
Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cancer Biology · Member, Neuroscience Graduate Program

Anna earned her PhD at the University of Edinburgh studying herpesvirus non-coding RNAs, then trained as a postdoc with David Knipe at Harvard Medical School on the chromatin regulation of HSV infection. In Mohanish Deshmukh's lab at UNC she built a primary neuronal system to study HSV latency and reactivation. She joined UVA in August 2016 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022.
